New Hope Presbyterian Church

Building Extension Project

July 31, 2010

The following video clips were taken Friday July 30th at 5 pm. A lot of work was done this week on the offices and roof over the narthex. The critical cutting into the roof of the existing roof to install the supporting beams was successful and “dry”. God answered our prayers by providing dry weather in an otherwise wet summer. The beams for the roof over the center part of the sanctuary are starting to arrive. They will be installed sometime next week.

Continue to pray for the safety of those who will be working some 30 feet off the ground to install the roof over the center part of the sanctuary.

The following video clips show the work being done to install the roof on the addition. A prayer request is that there would be no rain for a two day period as the roof of the existing church must be partially removed in order to integrate the existing church roof with the roof of the new addition. The video clips of July 28th show the steel superstructure (beams) that run parallel and over the existing church roof line. Once this interface is complete we are hopeful that we will once again have a dry basement on a regular basis.

Please continue to pray for the safety of the workers who are having to work in high places.

June 29 & July 2, 2010

The masons have been busy installing concrete blocks for the sanctuary walls. The following photos were taken Tuesday June 29th and Friday July 2nd to show how much progress can be made in three days without rain. Pray for the workers’ safety as you can see that the walls are quite high. As time goes on more structural steel will be installed and work will begin on the sanctuary ceiling.

In case you were wondering if the addition seemed small, a measurement of one of the class rooms was made to reassure us that the building matches the design. It does. Once the floor was poured the addition seems larger.

The next four photos are pictures of the completed floor for the addition. Approximately 9,500 square feet of concrete that is 4 1/2 inches thick. The plasic covering is to help the curing process.

Work continues. It appears most of the work on the foundation wall is done and the ground is filled back in. The first picture shows the footprint of the sanctuary from the west side of the church (the top of the foundation that travels through the middle of the site forms the back wall of the sanctuary). Depending on the weather the concrete floor for the entire addition should be poured next week.

The second picture shows the east side of the addition note the foundation wall is complete and the semi-circle of the foundation wall will make up the outside wall of the new library. The main entrance will be located between the library and the existing church building. Finally the third picture shows the cement walls of the new elevator shaft.

May 21, 2010

It was a good week. There have been questions about the hole in the grassy area north of the church. Code requires that we collect all of the water runoff from the roof of the new facility and transfer it to the storm sewer system by means of underground piping. In addition, a change in topology is needed so that water can be channeled to the storm sewer during very heavy rains.

The excavation north of the church serves as the runoff water collection system. The following photos show the excavation of the collection system complete with some artifacts from the past. The concrete catch basin is in place, we expect the site will be regraded so that the top of the manhole will be flush with the ground level. There will be a depression of about three feet, efforts will be made to try and achieve a grade so that fencing will not be required. Again this was driven by code requirements. Here are the pictures:

Significant progress was made on the construction of the foundation. It appears that most of the footings are poured. The foundation wall has been poured, forms removed and backfilled with the west and most of the south foundation wall being completed.

Work on the elevator shaft continues. The following picture shows the status as of Friday afternoon. The shaft is rectangular to accommodate the elevator door being on the east side of the elevator (an entry chamber is needed to enter and exit the elevator).

Finally the next photo shows that the existing church’s air conditioning units are re-installed and ready to be called upon this Sunday if forecasted temperatures in the 80’s materialize. After input from the congregation and discussions with the leadership it was determined that the air conditioners should be re-installed for this summer. Many thanks to Rog and the subcontractors for getting the air conditioning units re-installed so quickly.

May 15, 2010

In spite of the rain this week progress continues. This week the forms for the foundation wall have been installed on the west wall and the cement has been poured. Also, the ground has been removed along the south side of the existing church and the footing for the east side of the addition has been installed.

After receiving input from the congregation and considering all of the issues, the Trustees have decided to have the existing air conditioning units reinstalled so that we will have air conditioning in the existing church this summer.

Pictures of the construction project as of May 14th follow:

May 7, 2010

Today the elevator pit was dug and the first load of cement was delivered. The pictures show that the church is currently being served by a temporary natural gas service (we should have heat this Sunday). The close up picture of the pit shows the underground electric service hanging in mid-air for now. The cement for most of the footings has been poured. Selmer appears to be a little ahead of schedule.

On May 17th we should be finalizing the decisions related to interior design so that orders can be placed for items such as interior doors.

May 5, 2010

The project is moving along rapidly. At this point Selmer is either on or slightly ahead of schedule. A recent quote sums it up: “While we may feel we have plenty of time this is not the case. I have found that to date you blink your eye and boom something is gone or a hole is dug. Can you imagine that we may be drilling the holes for the pew mountings within three weeks?”

With a project of this complexity, there are from time to time surprises. One such surprise involves our air conditioning for the existing church, in order to complete the foundation work (see link to photo that follows), the main air conditioners to our existing church had to be permanently taken out of service. We were unaware that this would be required. We can either get along without air conditioning until the new air conditioning system for the addition is installed and integrated into our existing church currently scheduled for late September (just in time for Indian summer) or we can spend approximately $1,500 to temporarily install the existing air conditioners so that they can be used this summer.

The trustees will work on a plan to mitigate some of the discomfort. The decision may be to go ahead and spend the $1,500, your feedback as to whether or not you feel it would be a worthwhile expenditure would be appreciated. Please let a trustee know your opinion.

Thank you for your patience.

Meanwhile, the ranch house is on the move. The next photo link shows the house is ready for departure. We are not sure exactly when but recent activity suggests it will not be too much longer.

20100504 - Footing for west wall of addition

The link above “Footing for west wall of addition” was taken this evening. Most of the trench is dug and about 1/2 of the footing is in. The bend in the footing in the foreground of the picture is the diagonal front of the sanctuary which will contain the large window.

May 1, 2010

Construction has started. The 2411 Deckner ranch is temporarily stored in the church parking lot. Within about one week, the house will be moved off site. The Selmer construction trailer also occupies a small portion of the parking lot. The ministry center has been taken down and both basements (2411 ranch and ministry center) have been filled in. The fiber optic cable relocate is complete. Temporary electric service to church is being installed. The easement for new electric service to the church has been approved and executed.

Excavation has begun.

All permits are now approved.

April 18, 2010

Today, April 18th, New Hope celebrated God’s faithfulness and His provision. We had our groundbreaking ceremony. Charter members and the youngest members each participated in the turning of sod to mark the start of construction. We are filled with excitement as we see God continue to work through this project.

20100418 - Groundbreaking

This past week’s (April 12 – 18) activities included:

1. Taking down a tall silver maple on the south east corner of the property so that the conduit for the fiber optic cable could be installed.

2. Installing the conduit for the fiber optic cable.

3. Moving the ministry center garage to its new location near the hill east of the existing parking lot.

4. Preping the ranch home (2411 Deckner) for its move next weekend.

5. Reviewing bids for the numerous subcontracts that make up the construction of the new addition.

6. Attending the Green Bay Planning Commission meeting and observing unanimous approval for our conditional use permit.

This coming week the planned activities include:

1. Meeting with the construction manager to establish the guaranteed maximum price and sign the construction agreement.

2. Moving the actual fiber optic cable so that construction can begin.

3. Moving the ranch home off site.

4. Making final preparations for the start of construction on April 26th.

Our prayer requests are:

1. For safety for those involved in construction of the addition.

2. For a match between the final cost of construction and our finances.

3. For continued unity as we go through this transition together.

Finally it is our prayer that this addition will be used to the glory of God and the advancement of His kingdom.

April 2, 2010

Sunday School will continue to be held in the Ministry Center through April 11th. There will be no heat in the Ministry Center on April 11th so dress appropriately.

——————————————————————————————–
On Sunday March 7, 2010 the New Hope Corporation unanimously passed the following motion.

Motion:

New Hope Orthodox Presbyterian Church Corporation approves proceeding with the addition of approximately 9,530 square feet to the existing church at 130 Winchester Way as well as remodeling the existing 4,400 square feet on the first level of the existing church building.

The “Total Construction Cost” is not to exceed $1.9 million.
—————————————————————————————————————————

The building extension project has been approved so that it can serve as one of the tools needed to expand New Hope’s ministry to the people of Green Bay who need to know Christ.

The members and friends of New Hope are grateful for the work done by the members of the Ministry Expansion Committee who chased down endless details that needed to be resolved in order to take this project from an idea to a reality.

The major milestones that are coming up include:

Offices moved and Ministry Center empty – Due March 20 - Done March 13th due to the huge turn out of friends and members to help with the move.

Offices are operational in temp location – Due March 22 - Done March 13th.

2411 Deckner Vacant – March 27 - Done March 29th

Salvage both buildings – April 17

Ground breaking – April 18

Construction starts – April 26

Addition complete – October 31

Remodel complete – January 31

Please continue to pray for this project:

1. That we would be a witness to the contractors who we will interact with.

2. That the people who work on this project will be kept safe from harm or injury.

3. That the bids will come in lower than we estimate. That the relocation of a fiber optic cable will be done at an affordable cost and in a timely manner.

4. That the various teams (design, transition, and finance) will be given the time, health and strength to continue to support this project.

5. That we as a body of believers will grow in unity and care for one another as we deal with the disruptions that this project could bring.

Praise God for the way He has provided in this project and we continue to trust Him for His provision.
